What to Expect

The Therapy Process

If you reach out and let me know you are interested in learning more about working together, we will schedule a free initial 20-minute phone consultation during which we will get to know each other a bit and determine if my approach to therapy is a good fit for your treatment goals and preferences. If we mutually agree to begin working together, we will then schedule a 75-minute intake appointment. During this first meeting, I will be gathering a lot of information from you about your goals for treatment, present circumstances and relevant history. We will then collaboratively establish therapeutic goals and a treatment plan, which will serve as our guide as we move through your treatment. We will regularly monitor your progress and revisit your goals, adjusting as needed as treatment progresses. As you get closer to completing your goals, we will collaboratively discuss a plan for completing our work together.

My Approach to Therapy

While every course of therapy is unique, my approach to therapy will always be based in evidence-based practices (EBPs), which are treatment approaches that are supported by scientific research. I tailor these EBPs to best meet the unique goals, attributes, and values of each client, and strive to be culturally humble and aware in my practice. Our work together will be:

Collaborative

You are in the driver’s seat of your treatment. While I bring clinical expertise to our work together, you are the expert in your own experiences. We will work together every step of the way, ensuring you are getting the most out of your treatment experience. I also prioritize transparency in therapy, and encourage clients to ask questions and provide feedback every step of the way.

Active

We will both be active participants in your therapy. I will provide you with education, skills, and feedback as you progress in therapy, and the potential benefits you have to gain from therapy rely heavily on your willingness to also actively engage in the process. Out-of-session practice of the skills you are learning is very important for making progress in treatment.

Targeted

While it is impossible to predict exactly how many sessions will be needed to address your concerns, the EBPs I utilize are most effective in “episodes” of care rather than perpetual therapy. This allows us to better maintain a focus on your identified treatment goals. There is significant variability in how long treatment episodes last, but most are between 10-20 sessions.
